Wiki-links only connect the notes you remembered to connect. Suggested links close the gap: at the foot of a note, Notate offers other notes that cover related ground, whether or not anything links them today.

The suggestions come from the same understanding that powers semantic search: what a note is **about**, not which words it happens to share. A note on running out of storage can be suggested alongside one about download limits even if the two use no common phrasing.

## Using them

Each suggestion is a note title you can open. If the connection is a real one, link to it and it becomes an ordinary `[[wiki-link]]` in your file. The suggestion is a prompt, never an edit made on your behalf.

**Ask why.** A suggestion can look arbitrary until you know what prompted it. Ask for an explanation and Notate says what the two notes have in common, in a sentence. It happens on request rather than automatically, because generating it costs an AI call and most suggestions do not need one.

**Dismiss what does not fit.** Notate remembers a dismissal, so the same wrong pairing does not come back. Dismissals sync, so a pair you rejected on one device stays rejected everywhere.

## Backlinks show their context

Backlinks changed alongside this, and work differently: the panel now shows the **line each link sits in**, not just the title of the note that links to you. Seeing the sentence around a link usually answers "why does this note point here?" without your having to open it.

Backlinks are computed from your own files and need no plan or AI.

## What it needs

Suggested links need the **AI plan** and are not available on an end-to-end encrypted account, because the comparison happens against content an encrypted account never gives the server in readable form. See [The Note Map](https://notate.md/docs/organizing/note-map/) for the same constraint on the Meaning map.
