This update brings v4.20.0 to Windows, which was held back by a code-signing problem on our side. On Mac nothing changes from v4.20.0. Here is everything in v4.20.0:

What’s new

• Formatting now comes to your cursor. Select text and a toolbar appears over it with bold, italic, strikethrough, code and links, plus a Turn into menu for changing the whole line. The permanent row of buttons above every note is gone.
• Type / on a new line for a menu of everything you can insert: headings, lists, checklists, quotes, dividers, code blocks, tables, links to other notes, and images. An empty line also gets a + button that opens the same menu.
• Put the cursor in a table, list or code block and its controls appear beside it. Tables get add row, add column and alignment. Lists get indent, outdent and mark done. Code blocks get a language picker and copy.
• The cursor inside a link shows a card with where it points, and buttons to open it, change it or unlink it.
• Paste a URL and choose how it lands: a preview card, a plain link, or the URL as you typed it.
• Selecting text in Preview offers Copy, Copy as Markdown, Ask AI, and Edit here, which jumps to that line in the editor.
• The note header is more compact. The folder, save state and note actions share one line, and the view controls and tags sit on the row above your text, so your writing starts higher up the page.
• Prefer the old row of buttons? Settings → Editor → Toolbar → Fixed brings it back.
• Hover a note tab for its full title and where it lives. Right-click for Copy path and Reveal in Finder, or Show in Explorer on Windows.
• Notate explains why it needs folder access on macOS before asking, and recovers if you decline.
• A recording shows which folder its note will land in before you start.
• New documentation on formatting, at notate.md/docs.

Fixes

• Recordings save their transcript to the note again, so View transcript appears on notes made from a recording. Recordings made before this update are not affected.
• A recording files its note in the workspace and folder you made it in.
• The AI Assistant stays put through a recording instead of disappearing.
• A finished recording no longer reports itself as lost.
• The editor keeps its room in a narrow window and with the AI panel open. Free mode now behaves the same as an account.

What’s new

• Zoom the whole app in or out. Use View → Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Actual Size, or ⌘= / ⌘- / ⌘0 (Ctrl on Windows). You can also change it in Settings → Appearance. Notate remembers your zoom level on this computer.

• Switching between Editor, Split, Live, and Preview now keeps your place in the note instead of jumping to a different line.

What’s new

• Notate now remembers your layout. If you hide the folder list or the note list, or turn on focus mode, it stays that way the next time you open the app.

Fixes

• Opening a note no longer leaves the previous note’s text in the editor. In some cases, typing straight after that could save the wrong content into the note you just opened.
• Switching notes no longer flashes the previous note before the new one appears. It was most noticeable when leaving a long note.
• Closing a tab now slides the highlight across to the next tab instead of jumping to it.
• The AI Assistant no longer replays its animation, or scrolls the conversation, when you leave it and come back. Only new replies animate.

Fixes

• Open tabs no longer turn into unclickable “Untitled” entries. Selecting a folder could strip every tab outside it of its title and leave it dead to clicks. Tabs now keep their titles, and a tab whose note has been deleted closes itself.
• On a computer that is still catching up on sync, tab titles now fill in as your notes arrive instead of staying “Untitled”.
• Switching workspaces now shows that workspace’s own tabs. The tab bar was carrying the previous workspace’s tabs across, and opening a note there could leave them stuck.

What’s new

• The Note Map now explains itself when Meaning mode is unavailable. Selecting Meaning tells you why, and offers the upgrade where one would help.

Fixes

• The plan cards in Settings now list the Note Map and suggested links. Both arrived in 4.14.0 but were missing from every plan comparison inside the app.

What’s new

• The Note Map now builds itself. Open Meaning mode and Notate builds the map for you, so a first visit shows the terrain rather than a button.
• A rebuild control, at the end of the map’s controls. The circular arrow takes in notes written since the map was last built.
• The map now says when there is too little to draw, rather than showing an empty canvas.

What’s new

• The Note Map: see a whole workspace at once. Open it from the map icon in the ribbon and it fills the editor area. There are two modes. Links draws your [[wiki-links]] as a graph, a circle per note and a line per link, colored by folder. Focus a single note to see only what it touches, hide the notes nothing links to or go hunting for them, filter by folder or tag, and search from inside the map so matches highlight where they sit. Links works on every plan, offline, and on an end-to-end encrypted account. In the web and desktop apps.
• Meaning mode reads your writing rather than your links and draws the result as a topographic map. Notes on the same subject form peaks, each one named from the notes underneath it, so the map arrives labeled rather than as anonymous blobs. Read it as a 2D contour map or switch to the raised 3D terrain and turn it. Meaning mode needs the AI plan, and is not available on an end-to-end encrypted account.
• Content gaps. Meaning mode finds the low pass between two peaks and names the pair: two subjects you write about often with almost nothing joining them. Click one and the map holds it while you zoom and turn, with the note list filtered to both subjects at once. Usually it is the note you have not written yet.
• Suggested links. At the foot of a note, Notate offers other notes that cover related ground, whether or not anything links them today. Ask why and it explains what the two have in common in a sentence. Dismiss one that does not fit and it stays dismissed, on every device. In the web, desktop and mobile apps.
• Backlinks now show the line each link sits in, not just the title of the note it came from, so you can usually tell why a note points at yours without opening it.
• A dashboard you can arrange. Eleven sections, each one a checkbox in Settings, and the list drags into whatever order you want. New sections: Open Tasks gathers unticked checkboxes out of your recent notes, Workspace Stats counts what is in the workspace, Folders and Tags give you jump points, Expiring from Trash warns before the sweep removes something for good, and Themes lists the subjects your notes group into. Sections with nothing to show hide themselves.
• New documentation at notate.md/docs covering the Note Map and suggested links, and a rewritten dashboard page listing every section and what it does.

Fixes

• Notes that lost their folder are visible again. A note whose folder was removed could disappear from the note list and the dashboard on the web app entirely. Those notes now appear wherever you are, and are found by search.
• Notes no longer lose their folder in the first place. When a folder was removed for good after its time in Trash, any note still inside it was left with no folder at all. Those notes are now moved to the nearest folder that survives.
• Notes in a subfolder are no longer deleted from disk. A subfolder inside a folder Notate does not manage could be treated as managed, which removed its files from your drive. Desktop only.
• Two notes with the same name no longer overwrite each other on disk.
• Theme names are now chosen as a set, so no two themes come back with near-identical names.
• The dashboard’s Recent, Favorites and Audio lists are now ordered consistently, so the same account shows the same notes on every device.
• Folder and tag cards on the dashboard now filter the note list, matching what they do in the sidebar.
• Note previews on the dashboard no longer show the properties block from the top of a note.
• Suggestion previews no longer include table markup.
• Panning and zooming the map no longer stutters on a large workspace.

Fixes

• Keyboard shortcuts shown in the app now match the keyboard you are using. The toolbar was labelling Bold and Italic with Ctrl on Mac, and search was showing the Command key on Windows.
• The update notes you are reading now are easier to read, with proper spacing between items.
• If you skip a version or two, this window now shows what changed in each of them, not only the newest release, with a link to the full changelog for anything older.

What’s new

• Find and replace inside a note. Press Cmd/Ctrl+F to open the find bar over the editor, or Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+F to open it with replace ready. Every match is highlighted, a counter shows where you are, and Enter steps through them. Match case and whole word narrow what counts, and Replace All undoes in one step. If a note’s properties are hidden, find skips them, so the counter always agrees with what you can see. Available in the web and desktop apps.
• Search now shows you where it matched. Each result carries its own count, the first few matches, and the line number of each one. Click a match to open the note at that exact spot with the rest still highlighted, ready to step through.
• Narrow a search with operators. Combine tag:, title:, folder:, path:, created:, updated:, is: and has: with each other and with your search words, quote a value containing spaces, and put a - in front of anything you want excluded. So tag:work updated:>2026-01-15 -is:favorite is a single search. They work the same way on every device, and in the command line tool and over MCP.
• Choose which workspaces a search covers: the one you are in, all of them, or one you pick by name so it stays put while you work elsewhere.
• Results found by meaning are now grouped separately from results that contain your words, so it is clear which are matches and which are suggestions.
• Search on your phone. A new Search tab looks across the whole workspace and takes the same operators, rather than only filtering the list in front of you.
• Turn off spelling suggestions while you type, in Settings.
• New and expanded documentation at notate.md/docs, including a page on jumping straight to a note by name, the full operator reference, and what happens when an operator is not recognised.

Fixes

• Search no longer returns notes from other workspaces.
• On phones, searching for two words now finds notes containing both of them rather than either one, so results are far more relevant.
• On phones, a search that matches nothing now says so, instead of quietly falling back to a looser search and showing unrelated notes.
• Selecting a tag no longer keeps filtering after you switch to another sidebar tab.
• Search previews no longer show the properties block from the top of a note.

What’s new

• Use your own AI keys. If you already have an Anthropic or OpenAI account, add your key in Settings and Notate runs its AI features on it, billed to you by that provider instead of through an AI plan. Each key turns on the features it powers: an Anthropic key covers chat, writing tools, auto-tagging, and image descriptions, and an OpenAI key covers transcription. Semantic search is included either way. Available on the Sync plan, and your keys are encrypted before they are stored and never shown again after you save them.
• Choose which Claude model your own key uses: Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4.6, Sonnet 5, or Opus 5. The AI plan stays fully managed, with no keys or provider accounts to set up.
• Settings now shows which AI features are on and which are off, and why, so a single key never leaves you guessing about what stopped working.
• A new page at notate.md/docs/ai/bring-your-own-keys covering which key unlocks what, alongside plan and content updates across the rest of the site.

What’s new

• Connect Notate to an AI client over MCP. Turn it on in Settings, create a token, and a client like Claude can search, read, write, and organize your notes for you. It is off until you enable it, every action you allow is one you switch on yourself, and a token can be revoked at any time. Included with the Sync plan.
• A new page at notate.md/mcp covering what the connection can do, alongside a content refresh across the rest of the site.

Fixes

• Deleting a folder now asks what should happen to the notes inside it, so a note can never end up with no folder.
• Renaming a folder inside your workspace works reliably. Top-level folders keep the name of the folder on disk, and are renamed there.
• Filtering by folder name, and asking the assistant about a folder by name, both find the right notes again.
• Settings you changed before creating an account now come with you when you sign up, even if you had not written any notes yet.
• Plan messages name the feature in plain words instead of showing an identifier.

What’s new

• Highlight text with ==highlight==. Highlights render in the editor and the reading view across desktop, mobile, and web, and use standard markdown syntax, so they stay intact if you open your notes in another editor.

• Setting up your notes folder is clearer and never a dead end. If a folder can’t be used (for example, a permission is denied), Notate now explains why and lets you retry, pick another folder, or continue as a guest. You can change your default folder anytime in Settings.

• Mobile sign-in: when a saved session has expired, the “Cancel” option now returns you to guest mode instead of doing nothing.

• Meet Guest mode. The no-account, local-files mode is now called Guest. It keeps its own settings, and when you create or sign into an account your Guest notes and settings come with you.

• Much faster with lots of notes. Browsing, opening, editing, and saving are quicker in large folders, and the note list stays smooth at thousands of notes.

• Attachment folders show a real count. The Images folder now shows how many items it holds (notes plus images) instead of always reading 0.
• Click a folder, see its notes. Selecting a folder now lists just that folder’s own notes, matching the mobile app. Open a subfolder to see what’s inside it.
• A tidier editor and sidebar when space is tight. The editor toolbar keeps the Editor/Split/Live/Preview switcher visible and tucks the extra buttons into a “more” menu as the window narrows; the FOLDERS and NOTES headers do the same.
• Re-adding a folder brings its images back. Re-add a folder that contains images and those images are restored and show across your devices again.

• The Notate CLI is here. A new command-line client for your notes. Install it with npm install -g @notatemd/cli, sign in with your Notate account, and capture, search, and organize your notes without leaving the terminal.
• Ask questions across your notes, summarize, and rewrite text from the command line, and pipe your notes into scripts, cron jobs, and AI tools. It reads Markdown or JSON, and works with end-to-end encryption.

What’s new

• New notes now go into a folder you choose. Set a “Default folder for new notes” in Settings and it syncs across your devices. (The old “Unfiled” bucket is gone.)
• Deleting a top-level folder (a root) now moves it to Trash where it can be restored, instead of just disconnecting it. Trashed roots show up in Trash, and restoring one brings it and its notes back. Your files on disk are never deleted.
• Removing a folder from a workspace now only removes it from that workspace. If the same folder is in more than one workspace, it stays in the others.
• The Folders header has new controls: add an existing folder from your disk, and expand or collapse the whole tree at once. The + button creates a subfolder, or a new root when nothing is selected.
• The workspace switcher now shows the folder and note count under each workspace name, and lists your workspaces alphabetically.
• On mobile, you can create a new root folder from the + button at the top level.

• Pause Sync: you can now pause syncing on a single device and resume it whenever you want, without signing out. The controls live under Settings, Data, Sync, and a banner keeps you aware while a device is paused.

• Generating AI tags or a summary and then switching to another note no longer applies them to the wrong note. They always attach to the note you started from, and the generating indicator stays on that note too.
• Top-level folders can no longer be dragged in a way that created duplicate roots.

• Refreshed the account and workspace switchers, and password-reset emails now use the Notate logo.

What’s new

• Drag and drop got a lot better on desktop. Drag a folder onto Notate to add it, choosing to copy it in or add it as a top-level folder that stays in sync with its place on disk. Dropped files open right away as tabs, and now the whole window is a drop target, not just the editor.

• Deleting a folder is now always recoverable. It can no longer get stuck out of both your notes and Trash; it reliably lands in Trash where you can restore it.
• The Update Available prompt’s Restart Now button no longer does nothing. It installs the update and restarts as expected.

• Maintenance release. We added first-party product analytics to help guide what we build next, plus internal admin tooling and behind-the-scenes cleanup. No changes to your notes, the editor, or sync. No third-party trackers, and end-to-end encrypted notes stay unreadable to us.

What’s new

• End-to-end encryption. Turn on end-to-end encryption and your notes are encrypted on your device before they sync, so the server only ever stores ciphertext. You get a recovery phrase to restore access after a password reset, and it works across web, desktop, and mobile. AI features are automatically turned off while encryption is on, since the server can’t read encrypted notes.
• Multiple accounts on one device. Sign into more than one Notate account and switch between them from the account menu, no signing out required (desktop and mobile).
• Disk-vs-server conflict resolver. When a note changes both on disk and on the server, Notate now shows a clear choice, Use Mine, Use Server, or Keep Both, instead of silently picking a side (desktop and mobile).
• Open files from anywhere (mobile). Open markdown files from other apps or your Files browser, preview them read-only, and Copy to Workspace when you want to keep one. Markdown files shared from another app route straight into an import flow.
• Built-in support. A new Support section in Settings sends your message to the team, with optional environment and sync-health diagnostics attached so problems are easier to track down.

Fixes

• Reliable Trash and folder deletes. Deleting a folder no longer risks it reappearing later; deleted folders now show in Trash and restore correctly across devices; and Empty Trash is always available.
