Changelog

Every Notate release, newest first. These are the same notes you see in the app when an update is available.

v4.12.0

What’s new

  • Use your own AI keys. If you already have an Anthropic or OpenAI account, add your key in Settings and Notate runs its AI features on it, billed to you by that provider instead of through an AI plan. Each key turns on the features it powers: an Anthropic key covers chat, writing tools, auto-tagging, and image descriptions, and an OpenAI key covers transcription. Semantic search is included either way. Available on the Sync plan, and your keys are encrypted before they are stored and never shown again after you save them.
  • Choose which Claude model your own key uses: Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4.6, Sonnet 5, or Opus 5. The AI plan stays fully managed, with no keys or provider accounts to set up.
  • Settings now shows which AI features are on and which are off, and why, so a single key never leaves you guessing about what stopped working.
  • A new page at notate.md/docs/ai/bring-your-own-keys covering which key unlocks what, alongside plan and content updates across the rest of the site.

v4.11.0

What’s new

  • Connect Notate to an AI client over MCP. Turn it on in Settings, create a token, and a client like Claude can search, read, write, and organize your notes for you. It is off until you enable it, every action you allow is one you switch on yourself, and a token can be revoked at any time. Included with the Sync plan.
  • A new page at notate.md/mcp covering what the connection can do, alongside a content refresh across the rest of the site.

Fixes

  • Deleting a folder now asks what should happen to the notes inside it, so a note can never end up with no folder.
  • Renaming a folder inside your workspace works reliably. Top-level folders keep the name of the folder on disk, and are renamed there.
  • Filtering by folder name, and asking the assistant about a folder by name, both find the right notes again.
  • Settings you changed before creating an account now come with you when you sign up, even if you had not written any notes yet.
  • Plan messages name the feature in plain words instead of showing an identifier.

v4.10.0

What’s new

  • Highlight text with ==highlight==. Highlights render in the editor and the reading view across desktop, mobile, and web, and use standard markdown syntax, so they stay intact if you open your notes in another editor.
  • A new markdown guide at notate.md/markdown-guide: the full syntax, with live examples you can edit as you read.
  • notate.md now has a changelog and an FAQ, so you can see what shipped in each release and get quick answers about files, sync, and AI.

v4.9.0

What’s new

  • The account switcher now scrolls when you have several profiles, so Add Account and Sign Out stay reachable however many accounts you have.
  • The account you are currently signed into now appears at the top of the account switcher.

Fixes

  • AI Features settings on the web app now save reliably.
  • Reset All Settings now restores everything it should, including your theme, on web, desktop and mobile.
  • Settings you change in Guest mode now carry over when you create an account.
  • Settings no longer carry between profiles when you switch accounts on the same device.
  • An account no longer shows “needs sign-in” when its session is still valid.

v4.8.3

Fixes

  • Fixed a bug on desktop where opening a file could clear the content of a note you already had open.
  • On desktop, closing a note tab now switches to your other open tab correctly instead of dropping to the dashboard, and the active tab highlight resizes to match.
  • The desktop notes list no longer briefly flashes empty when you return from Settings or Trash.
  • Your plan now shows correctly across all your devices without needing to sign out and back in.
  • Backlinks now update right after syncing, and bold text renders correctly in AI chat.
  • Cleaned up the AI chat on mobile and improved the sign in and register form layout on tablets.
  • Fixed a small wording error on the mobile billing screen.

Other

  • Refined the app icon on desktop and mobile.

v4.8.2

Fixes

  • Fixed the “Couldn’t sync” status banner sometimes showing on an account that didn’t have the sync issue after switching accounts.

Other

  • Tidied the AI Features screen for accounts that don’t have the AI plan.

v4.8.1

Fixes

  • Fixed the Version History capture interval on the desktop app. You can now change how often versions are saved, and your choice stays consistent across your devices.

v4.8.0

Fixes

  • Version history now saves a new version on every edit as expected. If you use the desktop app signed in to an account, the “Every save” capture setting now works correctly.
  • Your version-history capture interval is now saved to your account, so it stays consistent across all your devices.
  • Fixed the version-history sidebar flickering each time it refreshed.

v4.7.1

Fixes

  • Fixed a bug on the desktop app where editing a note longer than about a page could cut off text from the end of the note after saving or syncing. Updating protects your notes from any further truncation.

v4.7.0

What’s new

  • The macOS app is now signed and notarized by Apple, so it installs and opens without the “unidentified developer” warning.
  • The AI credits meter now shows how many credits you have left out of your total, alongside the percentage.

Fixes

  • Fixed the Toggle Note List keyboard shortcut (and Next / Previous Tab) not working, most noticeably on Windows.

v4.6.0

What’s new

  • AI credits: your monthly AI allowance and any purchased credits now show as a live meter in Settings → Billing. Buy one-time credit packs whenever you need more.
  • Audio transcription now runs on your AI credits, alongside the other AI features.
  • Delete your account: permanently remove your account and its data from Settings → My Account, or at notate.md/delete-account.
  • Smoother checkout: choosing a plan takes you straight to secure checkout.

Fixes

  • Billing: the “Manage Billing” button no longer gets stuck on “Opening…”.

Other

  • New accounts now confirm their email address before the first sign-in.

v4.5.3

What’s new

  • Setting up your notes folder is clearer and never a dead end. If a folder can’t be used (for example, a permission is denied), Notate now explains why and lets you retry, pick another folder, or continue as a guest. You can change your default folder anytime in Settings.

Fixes

  • Mobile sign-in: when a saved session has expired, the “Cancel” option now returns you to guest mode instead of doing nothing.
  • Free mode now opens to your default workspace on a fresh install, instead of showing “No Workspace.”

v4.5.2

Fixes

  • The account switcher is now locked while a recording is in progress, so you can’t accidentally switch profiles and lose an in-progress recording.

v4.5.1

Other

  • Reorganized the left toolbar so file actions come first: New Note stays pinned at the top, followed by Open File, Open Folder, and Image Manager, then the recording buttons (Meeting, Lecture, Memo, Verbatim).
  • Renamed “Capture & Transcribe Memo” to “Record & Transcribe Memo” for consistency with the other recording modes.

v4.5.0

What’s new

  • Meet Guest mode. The no-account, local-files mode is now called Guest. It keeps its own settings, and when you create or sign into an account your Guest notes and settings come with you.
  • Watch your notes migrate. Bringing your Guest notes into an account now shows a progress bar and is much faster and more reliable, even for very large folders.
  • Much faster with lots of notes. Browsing, opening, editing, and saving are quicker in large folders, and the note list stays smooth at thousands of notes.
  • Indexing you can see and stop. Adding a folder shows files/folders progress and can be cancelled, with an editable per-device list of what to skip in Settings → Files.
  • Reset local data. A new Settings → Advanced → Reset local data on desktop and mobile clears this device’s local copy without signing you out.
  • Show or hide your password on the Create Account screen.
  • Settings apply instantly. Changes made elsewhere now take effect without relaunching the app.

Fixes

  • Migrating a large folder no longer fails with “Couldn’t migrate your notes.”
  • Switching between accounts no longer leaks one account’s notes or settings into another.
  • Guest mode no longer re-adopts folders that already belong to an account.
  • Fixed getting stuck on “No Workspace”; your default workspace is restored when it’s missing.
  • Resetting settings no longer signs you out.
  • “Get 2 Months Free” now shows only on the Annual plan.
  • Fixed a rare drag-and-drop crash.

Other

  • The Free plan now clearly shows only local features (Sync and end-to-end encryption are account features).
  • Wording and label clean-up across Settings.

v4.4.0

What’s new

  • Attachment folders show a real count. The Images folder now shows how many items it holds (notes plus images) instead of always reading 0.
  • Click a folder, see its notes. Selecting a folder now lists just that folder’s own notes, matching the mobile app. Open a subfolder to see what’s inside it.
  • A tidier editor and sidebar when space is tight. The editor toolbar keeps the Editor/Split/Live/Preview switcher visible and tucks the extra buttons into a “more” menu as the window narrows; the FOLDERS and NOTES headers do the same.
  • Re-adding a folder brings its images back. Re-add a folder that contains images and those images are restored and show across your devices again.

Fixes

  • Removing a folder from a workspace no longer leaves your other devices stuck on “Couldn’t sync.”
  • Open tabs now close on their own when their folder is removed.
  • Fixed several image drag-and-drop issues when working with local folders.
  • Small visual polish in the FOLDERS header.

Other

  • Behind-the-scenes storage cleanup so removed images don’t linger.

v4.3.1

What’s new

  • The Notate CLI is here. A new command-line client for your notes. Install it with npm install -g @notatemd/cli, sign in with your Notate account, and capture, search, and organize your notes without leaving the terminal.
  • Ask questions across your notes, summarize, and rewrite text from the command line, and pipe your notes into scripts, cron jobs, and AI tools. It reads Markdown or JSON, and works with end-to-end encryption.

Other

  • New CLI page and full command documentation at notate.md.

v4.3.0

What’s new

  • New notes now go into a folder you choose. Set a “Default folder for new notes” in Settings and it syncs across your devices. (The old “Unfiled” bucket is gone.)
  • Deleting a top-level folder (a root) now moves it to Trash where it can be restored, instead of just disconnecting it. Trashed roots show up in Trash, and restoring one brings it and its notes back. Your files on disk are never deleted.
  • Removing a folder from a workspace now only removes it from that workspace. If the same folder is in more than one workspace, it stays in the others.
  • The Folders header has new controls: add an existing folder from your disk, and expand or collapse the whole tree at once. The + button creates a subfolder, or a new root when nothing is selected.
  • The workspace switcher now shows the folder and note count under each workspace name, and lists your workspaces alphabetically.
  • On mobile, you can create a new root folder from the + button at the top level.

Fixes

  • Workspaces now consistently show the right folders and notes across the tree, dashboard, and Trash.
  • Fixed the folder and note counts shown next to each workspace.
  • You can now fully clear a note title by deleting the last character.
  • Restoring or deleting a root no longer leaves behind duplicates, orphaned entries, or lost files.

Other

  • The account avatar initials are easier to read, and the Folders sidebar is a bit wider by default.
  • Contact links on the Terms and Privacy pages now point to the Support page.

v4.2.0

What’s new

  • Pause Sync: you can now pause syncing on a single device and resume it whenever you want, without signing out. The controls live under Settings, Data, Sync, and a banner keeps you aware while a device is paused.

Fixes

  • Generating AI tags or a summary and then switching to another note no longer applies them to the wrong note. They always attach to the note you started from, and the generating indicator stays on that note too.
  • Top-level folders can no longer be dragged in a way that created duplicate roots.

Other

  • Refreshed the account and workspace switchers, and password-reset emails now use the Notate logo.

v4.1.0

What’s new

  • Drag and drop got a lot better on desktop. Drag a folder onto Notate to add it, choosing to copy it in or add it as a top-level folder that stays in sync with its place on disk. Dropped files open right away as tabs, and now the whole window is a drop target, not just the editor.
  • You can add a folder that already exists on your disk from Settings, Files, instead of only ever creating a new one.

Fixes

  • Deleting a folder is now always recoverable. It can no longer get stuck out of both your notes and Trash; it reliably lands in Trash where you can restore it.
  • The Update Available prompt’s Restart Now button no longer does nothing. It installs the update and restarts as expected.

v4.0.1

Other

  • Maintenance release. We added first-party product analytics to help guide what we build next, plus internal admin tooling and behind-the-scenes cleanup. No changes to your notes, the editor, or sync. No third-party trackers, and end-to-end encrypted notes stay unreadable to us.

v4.0.0

What’s new

  • End-to-end encryption. Turn on end-to-end encryption and your notes are encrypted on your device before they sync, so the server only ever stores ciphertext. You get a recovery phrase to restore access after a password reset, and it works across web, desktop, and mobile. AI features are automatically turned off while encryption is on, since the server can’t read encrypted notes.
  • Multiple accounts on one device. Sign into more than one Notate account and switch between them from the account menu, no signing out required (desktop and mobile).
  • Disk-vs-server conflict resolver. When a note changes both on disk and on the server, Notate now shows a clear choice, Use Mine, Use Server, or Keep Both, instead of silently picking a side (desktop and mobile).
  • Open files from anywhere (mobile). Open markdown files from other apps or your Files browser, preview them read-only, and Copy to Workspace when you want to keep one. Markdown files shared from another app route straight into an import flow.
  • Built-in support. A new Support section in Settings sends your message to the team, with optional environment and sync-health diagnostics attached so problems are easier to track down.

Fixes

  • Reliable Trash and folder deletes. Deleting a folder no longer risks it reappearing later; deleted folders now show in Trash and restore correctly across devices; and Empty Trash is always available.
  • Many sync reliability and convergence fixes across desktop, web, and mobile.
