Editor preferences

Open Settings → Editor on web and desktop to shape how the editor works. The mobile editor is simpler and exposes fewer of these options.

View and saving

  • Default view mode sets how notes open: Editor, Live (live preview), Split, or Preview.
  • View mode scope decides what happens when you switch view mode. Global (the default) uses one view mode for every note, so switching applies wherever you go. Per note remembers the mode you last used for each note on this device, and notes you haven’t set yet open in the default view mode.
  • Note auto-save delay controls how long after you stop typing Notate saves, from 500ms to 5s.

Toolbar

Toolbar chooses where formatting lives.

  • Contextual, the default, shows formatting where you are working: a toolbar over selected text, controls beside the table or list your cursor is in, and a / menu on a new line. There is no formatting row above the note.
  • Fixed keeps a row of formatting buttons above the note instead, and turns the pop-up toolbars off.

Either way you keep the view mode tabs, the line number and frontmatter toggles, and the note’s tags in the row above the text. Formatting as you write covers both in full.

Layout and spacing

  • Tab size switches indentation between 2 or 4 spaces.
  • Drag tabs to split, on by default, lets you drag a tab to the right or bottom edge of the editor to open it beside or below, or onto the other pane once split. Off, dragging a tab only reorders it. See Viewing two notes side by side.
  • Line numbers turns the editor gutter on or off.
  • Word wrap turns soft wrapping on or off for long lines.

Cursor

  • Cursor blink turns the blinking cursor on or off.
  • Cursor style sets the shape: Line, Block, or Underline.

When Link previews is on, pasting a single URL expands it inline into a title, description, and image.

With end-to-end encryption on, the desktop app fetches the page on your device and leaves the image out, and the web app keeps pasted links as plain links, so Notate’s server never sees them.
