Roots across your devices

Last updated

With sync on, your notes, folders, and tags are the same everywhere. The one thing that stays specific to each device is where a root folder physically lives on that machine.

The same root, a different place on each device

A root’s contents sync, but its location on disk does not. Your laptop might keep a root at one path and your desktop at another, and that is fine: each device points its own copy of the root at whatever local folder you choose. Notate keeps the folders and their contents in step over the network regardless of the paths.

Adding your account on a new device

When you sign in on a new device, choose where each synced root should live on that machine. On desktop the roots are placed under a base folder you can change later; on mobile you grant access to a folder for each root. After that, changes flow both ways automatically.

Renaming and moving are per device

Because paths are per device, moving or renaming a root’s directory on one machine does not move it on the others, and it is not something to do from outside the app. Use the in-app relocate and change-base options so Notate updates its bookkeeping. See Add, move, and remove a root.

A note on mobile access

On Android, Notate reaches a folder through an access grant tied to that exact folder. If the folder is renamed or moved outside Notate, the grant no longer resolves and the root shows as unavailable until you point Notate at it again. See Reconnect an unavailable folder.
